ANDREW TAKES 3RD PLACE IN THE WORLD COFFEE ROASTING CHAMPIONSHIPS!

This past weekend at the World Coffee Roasting Championships in Taipei, Taiwan, Head roaster Andrew earned a 3rd place finish!

20 Coffee Roasters from all over the world gathered to compete for the title of “World Champion.”

The competition involved roasting 4 separate compulsory coffees (provided by competition sponsors) to present to the judges as two separate entries: Single origin and a blended coffee.

The single origin was an El Salvador natural process bourbon, and the blend was made up of a Costa Rica honey process F1, an Ethiopia natural process Sidama, and a Taiwan washed typica from Alishan.

Roasters evaluated the green coffee, did a sample roast, and created a roast plan describing how the roast would go as well as describe the fragrance/aroma, flavor, aftertaste, acidity, sweetness, and mouthfeel of the resulting roast. The plan sheet had to be submitted prior to roasting the final submitted coffees to the judges.

Judging was based on both the quality of roast as well as roasting plan accuracy. Andrew scored very high marks for his blend coffee.

“The hardest part of the competition is how little time you get to evaluate each coffee” Andrew explained, “We roasted samples then cupped 4 hours later, and had to come up with a plan to submit by the following morning when production roasting began for the first competitors. Given this timeframe, I roasted using a very basic profile that I knew I could execute.”

One of the highlights of the show was having his family there and also connecting with the Taiwan coffee community. (Andrew is half-Taiwanese)

“My family was able to travel with me and we all spent a week touring my dad’s hometown before the competition started. My coach, Alex Huang, is based in Taiwan and introduced me to so many people. They were so enthusiastic and supportive. I’m also very grateful for my Elevator Coffee team who have encouraged and supported me from the very beginning of my roasting career.”

Andrew is the 2023 US Coffee Roasting Champion!

The competition consisted of three days with multiple elements:
Green coffee grading for defects
Sample roasting and coffee evaluation (this was the only time competitors were able to taste the roasted coffee)
Practice roasting
Roast plan sheet
Final roasting

The final score was based on:
Judges cupping evaluation of the final roast (out of 270)
Roast plan accuracy (out of 24)
Green coffee grading (out of 24)

Ratio 6 Coffee Brewer

We are excited to offer the Ratio 6 coffee brewer! We recently paid a visit to Ratio HQ. Our first impression of the Ratio Six was that is was an aesthetically pleasing brewer. Our next thought was just how simple it is. Fill with water and coffee, and then press the brew button. That's it.

Overall, the system is very simple to use. Decide how much coffee you want, grind and dose your beans, add the appropriate amount of water, and press go. Click below to read more about our experience!

Many cafes are re-opening for indoor dining which means online ordering, delivery, and curbside pickup are all beginning to disappear. While people are getting back into the office and students are returning to class, not everyone is quite ready. That is why we are offering discounted limited local delivery of whole bean coffee.

From the bottom of our hearts we want to thank you so much for your support of our cafe. We are truly grateful to all of you for being part of our community over the last 5 years. Building out that beautiful space and getting to share our specialty coffee through our own cafe venue has been a true labor of love with many amazing memories along the way. Unfortunately, like many community spaces affected by the pandemic, we are no longer financially in a position to keep our cafe doors open. Saturday, November 7th will be our last day of business. We will miss making our coffee drinks and breakfast sandwiches. We will miss our smiling, dedicated staff. We will miss our cafe customers. We are grateful to every one of you!

While our cafe doors are closing, this is by no means the end of Elevator coffee. Our coffee roasting will continue to operate, delivering our very best small batch, roasted coffee to our wholesale customers and directly to you through our online store.
